Final Fantasy XIII: First Impressions

Gamage : Insightful

Yesterday, Final Fantasy XIII came out, something I have been tracking for quite some time. I sort of randomly found out it was coming out so I opted to grab it up yesterday while running errands and thought I would share my first impressions so far:

The Good:
  • Graphics are Beautiful!
  • Story is new and intriguing though it bears some resemblance to parts of FF10 (better not have a similar ending!)
  • Interesting mix of science and fantasy (guns and magic)
  • Leveling system is new and interesting (though I am not sure how it will end up yet)
The So-So:
  • The music is good but does not always fit the mood and is not as catchy as it was in previous Final Fantasy titles.
  • This is not surprising since Nobuo Uematsu is not the mastermind behind the music. According to Wikipedia he will, instead, be working on Final Fantasy XIV, which is apparently going to be an MMO. That is disappointing but one of the things I dislike about World of Warcraft is the lack of diverse and catchy music. It's too ambient and there isn't enough of it so hopefully Nobuo can do a good job there at least.

  • New battle system is more real-time but with less control.
  • In FF13, you have a party leader and that is the person you control the most, at least so far (though I am still running into battle tutorials as I progress). It is faster and, in places, more fun, but definitely different. I haven't decided if I like it more than the old way, though I knew this feature was going to be controversial.

The Bad:
  • Spending all that time to port it to the Xbox 360
  • Not that I really care, but they did this late in the development of FF13 and it caused it to take quite a while to be released to anyone. 360 or otherwise. For the lengthy of the delay, FF13 better live up to the hype. So far it feels a lot like FF10, which, though I haven't finished it yet myself, apparently had a really crappy ending. Hopefully Square didn't do that again.

More to come but I thought I'd share my impressions.
